Our Mission

Who we are

Mayfair Town Watch is a community organization composed of dedicated citizens who provide essential service aimed at reducing crime at the grass roots level.  Mayfair Town Watch involves a cooperative effort between the citizens of Mayfair and local law enforcement, the 15th Police District. Our volunteers assist the community in several capacities: by patrolling the streets of Mayfair as well as acting as “eyes and ears” of their respective blocks. Our goal is to fight all quality of issues in our neighborhood and deter all future criminal activity.

Our Mission and Beliefs

We believe that Mayfair Town Watch is crucial in developing a sense of safety and hope for the citizens of our beautiful and historic neighborhood.  Understandably, many residents are concerned about the state of the community and our goal is to restore the trust, optimism and confidence that Mayfair will remain a desirable place to live and raise a family. Aside from the physical patrols and the “block watch”  initiatives, we will develop trainings to educate the community on crime prevention and assist neighbors in addressing quality of life issues by searching for available resources and referring them to the appropriate organizations.  We will continue to foster relationships with various departments within the city of Philadelphiaas well as other Town Watch organizations to promote cooperation and cohesiveness.

Broken Windows Theory

The overall safety of the neighborhood is an important indicator of its economic, social health and vitality.  Although diminishing in numbers, “safe” neighborhoods are crucial to foster common values and the quality of life in the community. Neighborhood crime, vandalism, graffiti and litter create fear and distrust among residents and slowly erode the foundation for strong communities.

The famous “Broken Window Theory” maintains that there is a strong relationship between order and maintenance issues in geographic areas and the level of crime that occurs in the same areas.

The proponents of the “broken widow theory” posit that if a particular neighborhood looks like no one is caring for it (i.e abandoned cars, broken windows, unkept properties, graffiti, trash and litter, overgrown vacant lots) then it becomes a magnet for increasing levels of anti-social and criminal behavior.  Eventually, as these quality of life issues increase, law-abiding citizens become more fearful and retreat from the area. Consequently, rather than attracting law-abiding citizens, the balance and vitality of that particular area tips to favor a criminal element. The mission of Mayfair Town Watch is to motivate the residents of Mayfair to sustain and cultivate their neighborhood to the best our abilities.
